“Boots on the ground, head in the stars.”
While we use those words as a brand mantra, they also describe who we are as people.
Alien Cowboy Club was started by husband-and-wife team Kelly Rathbone and Ryan Rebo, who are both artists in their own right. Kelly has enjoyed a career as a figurative sculptor and instructor, and Ryan has worked as a software engineer by day and a musician and songwriter by night—most recently under his project Ty Walker and The Humanoids, an alien/cowboy–themed band (how about that). Ryan is a fifth-generation Montanan; Kelly is a child of the world with roots in Texas.
The name of the brand stemmed from Ryan’s music project. While making merch for an upcoming tour, he made some tags that said “Alien Cowboy Club.” Later, when Kelly and Ryan started the brand and needed a name, they kept coming back to the one used for the band merch—and it stuck.
They live in Bali, Indonesia with their three children and a growing petting zoo of sorts. How they ended up there is a story for another time. While living in Bali, they saw the opportunity to make clothing locally, with so many talented makers on the island.
They gravitate toward what they like to call "high-frequency fabrics"—linen, hemp, organic cotton, and other natural fibers—along with plant dyes, hand-woven work, and a look that leans vintage with a western (cowboy) edge. The brand is intentionally slow fashion. In fact, some tags read “Very Slow Fashion”— it's half a joke, half mission statement.
They like it this way—less is more. It allows them to be intentional, obsess over the smallest details, ensure their partners are not overworked and are paid fairly, and avoid creating more stress in their lives than needed, leaving room for family time and their ongoing art endeavors.
Being artists at heart, they want each piece to feel like a work of art: something that invites curiosity, feels good to wear, lasts, and brings a bit more of your true self to the surface.
